Potential research design
I plan on doing a mixed methods design. Because my research will be an experimental design I hope that by using a mixed methods approach I can assess the outcomes of the study and understand how the students experienced the changes to the online course. Hopefully this will give me an overall understanding of how the experiment actually worked. Creswell and Guetterman outline the merits of using a mixed methods approach by stating, "The strength of this design is that it combines the advantages of both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data are more effective at recording outcomes of the experiment, and qualitative data help us understand how individuals are experiencing the process. In the experimental mixed methods design, the researcher can collect qualitative data, but the overall design still emphasizes quantitative approaches." (2019, p557) For these reasons I believe this design approach will be the best for my research.
Also I have changed my research questions a little to match my objectives for the research better. Please see them below.

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of the study is to test the
theory of a community of inquiry by comparing three course design strategies, asynchronous
instructor video, asynchronous group discussion with teacher comments, and
including additional resources with instructional materials, to determine the
most effective strategy in building teaching presence for an online course of
undergraduate students.
Research Questions:
- To what
extent does each of the three course strategies change the student’s perception
of teaching presence in an online course for undergraduate students?
- How does asynchronous instructor videos differ from asynchronous group discussion with teacher comments in terms of perceived teaching presence for online students in an undergraduate course?
- How does direct teacher instruction through, asynchronous videos and group discussion differ from indirect teacher instruction through additional resources in instructional materials in terms of teaching perceived teaching presence for undergraduate students in an online course?
- What teaching strategy resulted in the highest level of perceived teaching presence for students in the undergraduate online course?
