Potential research design I plan on doing a mixed methods design.  Because my research will be an experimental design I hope that by using a mixed methods approach I can assess the outcomes of the study and understand how the students experienced the changes to the online course. Hopefully this will give me an overall understanding of how the experiment actually worked. Creswell and Guetterman outline the merits of using a mixed methods approach by stating, "The strength of this design is that it combines the advantages of both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data are more effective at recording outcomes of the experiment, and qualitative data help us understand how individuals are experiencing the process. In the experimental mixed methods design, the researcher can collect qualitative data, but the overall design still emphasizes quantitative approaches." (2019, p557) For these reasons I believe this design approach will be the best for my research. Also
Purpose Statement: The purpose of this study is to compare four course design activities/strategies to determine the most effective in building a community of inquiry in an online course for undergraduate students.  Research Questions:  1. What is the level of Teaching Presence, Social Presence and Cognitive presence felt by the students in this course? 2.  To what extent does the course activity/strategy change the level of Teaching, Social, and Cognitive Presence? 3. Is the course design a factor in students perceptions of a Community of Inquiry?
